Best-Dressed Family in Minneapolis – Portrait Photographer Northfield, MN

Monday, July 22nd, 2013

I think many moms know what I’m talking about – the excitement that comes from planning the wardrobe for family pictures. And as a photographer, I get just as excited. I can help my clients choose the best outfits to help ensure their sessions are successful. As much as we’d like to say the clothes don’t matter, they really do. Or at least, the wrong clothes can have a negative impact on how my clients look and feel.

So you can imagine how thrilled I was when I met Dana and Kevin and their three gorgeous-eyed children. Dana did a phenomenal job styling her family. I love how everyone is in tones of blue without being overly matchy. The shirts and dresses (and Dana’s shoes – perfect!) all complimented our urban scenery in just the right way.

Thank you, Dana and Kevin, for a fun night during the session! I just received the album they ordered and it’s beautiful – a wonderful and compact way to enjoy their portraits for years to come.

Highlights from 2012 – Minneapolis/St. Paul Photographer

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

I don’t know about you, but I’m having a hard time realizing it’s 2013 already. My head is in denial about the passage of time and most days, when it comes time for me to date something, I start to write August. Just a little behind, there.

Part of the reason time flew so quickly in 2012 is because I had my busiest year as a photographer since opening up shop four years ago. From newborn and maternity photos to sessions with children and their families to high school senior portraits, I met wonderful clients at each one, and it’s been an honor to help tell their stories through photography. I also started working more in commercial and corporate photography, photographing a company’s employee appreciation picnics and the launch of a new company car, shooting cupcakes and treats for a new bakery and creating head shots for business professionals.

I’m looking forward to an even better 2013, filled with more creative opportunities and meeting new people along the way. Here are some of the highlights for Salina J Photography in 2012. You’ll see portraits taken at my studio in Burnsville and on-location in spots found across the Twin Cities and in clients’ homes.

Clients are booking through April now, so if you’re interested in hearing more about my services for your family or your business, contact me at salina@salinajphotography.com. I look forward to hearing your ideas and making the visions come to life.

Boys and Their Dog – Lakeville, MN Family and Pet Photographer

Monday, December 10th, 2012

This family came to me wanting photos of the two young boys and also the family pet dog, Newman. Ryder and Brady are busy, active kids and used to running around and refusing to sit still, but for our session they rewarded their mom’s efforts at wardrobe organization by giving me some beautiful, natural looks.

The black and white image was recently ordered as a 30×30 canvas to go over the family’s mantel in their two-story living room. It’s an amazing piece that the boys’ parents will treasure forever (and probably look to in moments of yelling and shouting in years to come, to recall the serene moment we captured).

Are you thinking about family portraits? I’m happy to accommodate requests for pets – I’ve done sessions with dogs and horses so far. And no temperature is too cold as long as my clients are comfortable – there is no rule that family portraits must be done outside between June and October. In a few weeks I’m photographing a family of five outdoors, and it will be fun to include a Minnesota feel to the portraits with the weather. I am now taking reservations for all photo sessions through May of 2013, so contact me today to get on the calendar!

Cousins – Northfield, MN Family Photographer

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

The day was dark and drizzly, but the faces inside the house were bright and bubbly. I had the pleasure of photographing a past client (see Carter’s first Salina J Photography debut here), plus his new sister and their twin cousins. I love watching my clients grow up through portraits.

A great benefit to hiring me for your family portraits is that you can either come to my studio in Burnsville, or I can come to you. For this particular photo shoot, since we were dealing with four young children, I packed up my gear and went to their home. I set up in a perfect, naturally-lit nook and took my time with the group photos and each individual shots. Have you ever been limited by a 15-minute time slot, during which one or all of your kids cried and wouldn’t run away? I had that experience, when my children were younger, before I became a photographer. So now I make sure the sessions are relaxed and last until we’ve captured what the parents most want.

A Mother’s Day Surprise – Lakeville, MN Family Photographer

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012

This spring I was contacted by a father who wanted to surprise his wife with portraits of their two children for Mother’s Day. We booked them for a session at my studio in Burnsville and they arrived ready for the camera, and ready to not say a word to their mom.

We had a great time at the session. Emily and Blake did normal sibling things like poke at each other and make faces to try to get the other to laugh, but we also capture some sweet images of them acting like they truly like each other (you could tell they do).

When I arrived at Matt and Michelle’s home, Michelle still had no idea about the portraits. I walked in with my laptop and huge portfolio full of samples and she looked from me to her husband and back at me. “So, do you do this work for a living?” she asked as she eyed my art case, still unopened.

We sat at the kitchen table and I started up my laptop. “What IS this?” she asked Matt, a smile on her face. When the slideshow with her kids’ portraits started to play, she brought her hand to her mouth and said, “Oh!” Yes, a few tears were shed as she realized what her surprise gift had been. When you’re a photographer, seeing tears from a client can actually be a good thing!

I’m so glad I was able to be a part of this wonderful surprise for their family, and I look forward to doing portraits of everyone together next spring.
