About Salina J Photography

Hi! My name is Salina, and I am a photographer working in the Minneapolis/St. Paul and southern Minnesota areas. I enjoy meeting new people, and luckily for me, my profession allows me to do that every week, whether I am photographing a newborn, baby, child, family or creating senior pictures. This blog showcases my recent photography, and will help you get to know me and my style of portraits a little better. I am based out of Northfield, but work on-location throughout the Twin Cities (and beyond) or in my studio in Burnsville. I work with my clients to choose the right locations, times and wardrobe pieces to ensure their portraits are beautiful and true reflections of who they are.

Down on the Farm – Twin Cities Photographer

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Here is part two of the three-family session I did on the multi-acre farm with the fabulous weathered buildings (part one is here). Meet Teara, Tom, and their precious toddler Faith. Faith, like most three year old children, has some beloved items she is quite attached to, and those items are hats. Her parents did try to convince Faith to part with the hat in her hand for at least a few portraits, but Faith insisted on keeping it close. And you know what? I think that’s great! In a short while, Faith will likely forget all about the hats and this little idiosyncrasy will turn into something Tom and Teara want to remember. Now they’ll have photographs to show them.

Little Faith, with her crystal blue eyes, is going to be a big sister in the not-too-distant future! Best wishes to Tom and Teara as the pregnancy approaches the final months!

I love this image! First of all, Faith is sitting on a giant pumpkin that her aunt, uncle and cousins grew in their pumpkin patch. Her uncle had to wheel it over to the barn in a wheelbarrow! Second, she’s holding her hat, which is a perfect little detail of her life right now. And lastly, her expression really says a lot about how she felt about having to sit while I photographed her!  I love sharing pictures with parents that show a bit of spark and real life to them – Tom and Teara included this one in the storyboard they had me create for them!

Last Leaves of Fall

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Yes, Minnesota has already had a few coatings of snow, but with my blog, the golden glow of autumn can last for months!

I photographed this family shortly after the waters flooding the Northfield area receded back to the Cannon River. The area where we did the session was covered in fine sand, left on the ground by the river.

Sara had two main goals in mind when it came time for her family portraits – she wanted one great photograph of everyone together, and she wanted individual pictures of her children, Jack and Lindsay, with their dad, Jason, since he will be deployed next year and it would be great for the kids to have an awesome picture to look at when they were missing him.

I think we accomplished those goals! I wish this family all the best as they head toward months apart – may the time pass quickly and bring Jason home safely!

Grateful for These Amazing Moments – Northfield, MN Child Photographer

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

I have photographed these great kids before – when sweet little Lauren here was a newborn. They’ve grown so fast! Mr. Jack was a willing and enthusiastic model, giving me all sorts of fabulous grins and having no problem looking at the camera, and Lauren looked simply adorable in the perfect outfits her mom chose. After I delivered her online gallery, mom Katie responded with a very sweet e-mail, saying, “I feel so grateful for these amazing moments you’ve captured for my entire family.”

The feeling is mutual; I feel grateful to be able to capture moments and expressions for all of my clients. I’ve had a great year full of incredible clients, some I’ve known for years and some I met for the first time.

Without further ado, here are Katie, Jade, Jack and Lauren!

With Twinkles in Their Eyes – Minnesota Family Photographer

Friday, November 12th, 2010

One gorgeous day in October I traveled over two hours away to Springfield, MN and photographed three families back-to-back. It was a whirlwind of a day but I had a lot of fun – what great people! We were on amazing property – I think over 10 acres with withered old outbuildings.

I photographed Jim, Sherri and their two adorable and sweet boys James and Bryce. The boys did such a good job having their portraits made. Love the twinkles in their eyes!

Boys will be boys!

Sherri told me this was the first time they had ever had family portraits taken, and I am so glad I was able to photograph them. As a photographer, I am always taking photographs of other people, but I don’t ask others to take pictures of me often enough. I think every parent should make sure they have regular photos taken with their kids, even if it’s just with the iPhone or your point-and-shoot. Some day our kids will love looking back at pictures from when they were little, and they’re going to want to see us grown ups, too!

I made sure to get a few portraits of Sherri and Jim alone, as well – love the way they’re looking at each other!
